Work Learn

What is Work Learn?

Work Learn is a wage-subsidy program for international students who want to work on campus. 

For every qualified international student hired through Work Learn, UBC contributes $9 per hour to the student's wage 

(the supervisor pays the remaining amount), for up to 150 hours per term. 

The minimum hourly wage for Work Learn positions is $13

Work Learn is jointly coordinated and administered by International Student Development and Career Services.

The goals of the Work Learn program are to:

  • Enhance the educational experience for international students by increasing on-campus work opportunities
  • Give international students more opportunities to participate in the campus community
  • Bring international students and international perspectives to work placements across the campus
  • Equip international students with useful career experience
When does the program begin?

The program starts on the first day of school in September and ends on April 30.

Who is eligible?

You can apply for Work Learn positions if you are:

  • An international, degree-seeking, undergraduate student
  • Registered full time with a study permit valid for at least six months
  • Registered in one of the following faculties/departments: 
    • Applied Science, 
    • Arts, Commerce & Business Administration, 
    • Education, Forestry, Human Kinetics, Land & Food Systems, 
    • Music, Science, Social Work

You are not eligible if you are an exchange, visiting, or graduate student.

How to find a Work Learn job

There are two ways to look for Work Learn jobs.

  1. Look for Work Learn jobs using CareersOnline. 

    1. Work Learn jobs will be posted at the end of August and throughout the year. 
    2. Apply for these jobs as you would any job (with a cover letter and resumé). 
    3. All Work Learn jobs will be identifiable with the words "Work Learn" in the job title.
  2. Tell the staff and professors in your department about the program. 

    1. They may be able to create a position for you. 
    2. If they have questions, ask them to contact Career Services for more information.
Program requirements
  • You can work a maximum of 300 hours over the school year (September to April).
  • You can work a maximum of 10 hours per week.
  • You must attend a 1.5-hour Canadian Workplace Culture workshop. We will email you the details.
  • You must write a 1- to 2-page report on your Work Learn experience at the end of your work term. We will email you the details.
Instructions for Work Learn students
  1. Download the Work Learn Authorization form (below) and complete the Student Declaration section.
  2. Review job postings on the CareersOnline website or speak to potential employers.
  3. Contact the employer directly to arrange for an interview.
  4. Request that the employer agreeing to hire you complete the Employer section of the Work Learn Authorization form.
  5. Return the fully completed Work Learn Authorization form to the Career Services office in person, by mail, or by fax.
