When you get your flight ticket from ground staff, take a look if there is special letters near your name. They are "SSSS" or "*S*" and means you need Secondary Security Screening Selection. Which means TSA wants to see you before you board, and it also means you will need extra minutes for additional security check.
Here are some main reasons of "SSSS" printed tickets.
1. Cash Purchase
2. No return ticket/ One-way reservation
3. Just random choice.
It is said that back-ground is not related to this issue, which means Immigration Status, Criminal Records are not the factors of Secondary Security Screening Selection. Also, your personal information have no effects on this issue.
If you are so unlucky and see there is "SSSS" nearby your name, you may be screened by puffer explosive detectors. Your carry-on luggage may be also be inspected by screener's hands. In the case of film or other items that cannot be X-rayed, the agent may perform a test for possible explosive materials. The screener may also use a hand held metal detector.
Although it is being said that TSA choose people randomly, many people from Middle East countries and Asia insist they take large portion of the "SSSS" victims.
